Do I Need a Licence for my Radios?

Whether you require a license depends entirely on what type of radios that you are intending to use. When using lower power radios there is no need for a licence, however when using higher powered equipment, you must obtain an Ofcom licence by law.

Leisure and Licence Free radios operate on up to 8 frequencies which have been allocated for use across the UK and Europe by Ofcom. By only transmitting at a low 0.5 watts of power, the range of the radios can be limited and you therefore do not need a licence to use them. These licence free radios are generally pre-set to operate on these 8 frequencies and this cannot be changed. One of the main disadvantages of this is that you may encounter interference in congested areas. Should this be the case, you may require higher powered, licensed radios.

Licensed radios are more commonly used in light/heavy industry and as a result the build quality and transmitting power is far superior. By transmitting at up to 5 watts of power, the range of the radios is significantly improved. A licence to use these radios varies subject to geographical location, however there is a 'UK Simple' licence available at £75 for 5 years. This is generally adequate for most of our customers.

Upon purchasing licensed radios, we will contact you so that we can carry out all of the Ofcom paperwork needed to get your appropriate licence to you as soon as possible.

Our service department can assist with all steps in the application process, making obtaining a licence painless and stress free. If you would prefer to contact Ofcom direct then please use the following link: www.ofcom.gov.uk
